Black Friday marks the start of the Christmas shopping season in the United States and many stores provide sales at discounted prices and open their stores, as early as midnight or sometimes even on Thanksgiving.

Black Friday is considered the busiest shopping day of the year in the country.

Black Friday 2023: Date

Black Friday falls a day after Thanksgiving, in the United States, and will fall on November 24, this year.

Black Friday 2023: History

As the week before Thanksgiving nears, leading brands, online retailers and other stores start releasing Black Friday deals. But how and where did the term Black Friday originate?

There are many stories surrounding the origins of the name Black Friday. Some believe that Black Friday got its name since retailers stopped encountering losses and began providing big discounts to customers. Others believed that good deals on this day would lead to significant profits since they were recorded in black while losses were marked in red.

The credit for the name Black Friday is given to the Philadelphia Police, who coined the term 1950s to emphasise the chaos that happens a day after Thanksgiving.

Black Friday 2023: Significance

Customers in the United States look forward to Black Friday each year as it is a major cultural and economic event. Black Friday not only represents the hunt for deals but also marks the beginning of the holiday season and the shared tradition of Christmas shopping.

Oil marketing stocks were in limelight on Thursday on account of fall in Brent crude price after US inventories expanded and discord within OPEC+ forced the group to delay its upcoming meeting. Sugar stocks too witnessed fresh buying due to improved domestic demand. Two-wheeler stocks like Hero Motocorp , Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor were also in focus amid strong sales growth witnessed during the festival season and rating agency’s rising growth forecast.

While the secondary market saw a range-bound move, heightened action was seen in the primary market.

“We are seeing strong response to the IPOs that opened this week of which IREDA was subscribed 36x, while Tata Technologies and Gandhar Oil were subscribed 13x until now,".

Overall, the market is likely to trade sideways in the near term with stock specific action in the broader space.

Nifty remained range-bound while encountering resistance around 19,850.

On the hourly chart, an ascending triangle is forming, suggesting a probable upside breakout. Sentiment is anticipated to stay sideways as long as it holds above 19,700. However, a drop below 19,700 might exert downward pressure on the Nifty.

Resistance at the higher end is established at 19,850; a significant move beyond this level could trigger a rally towards 20,200 in the short term.

The investment case for India really has always been a continuing structurally positive one, since the country has the best growth potential in both economic terms and in underlying corporate earnings compared to all major markets, said Goldman Sachs' Chief Asia Pacific Strategist Timothy Moe...

For the year 2024, the investment bank said their base case for Nifty is 21,800, upgrading India to an ‘overweight’ rating.

Goldman Sachs downgraded their view on India a year ago, because the frontline indices were trading at nearly 24x forward earnings, which seemed expensive. A lot of ‘good news’ has been factored into the valuation, so the investment bank reduced its long-standing ‘overweight’ call down to ‘market’ weight, said Moe.

However, for FY23, the underlying corporate earnings grew about 17 percent while Nifty is up nine percent during the same time. Therefore, there has been some narrowing of the valuation, as the PE ratio has come down from 24x to around 20x. “Currently that still is on the expensive side but not as expensive and, accordingly, we think it gives us an opportunity to lean back into the long-term strategically positive stance,” added Moe.

Over 50%, or 27, of the #nifty50 stocks hit a 52-week high in the past month, with 16 of them at a record high. Meanwhile, Nifty is just 1 percent higher during this period.

Additionally, 21 stocks on the Nifty 50 are 5 percent to 14 percent short of their 52-week highs. And, while none of the stocks is near a record low, UPL Ltd. and HDFC Bank are about 6 percent and 4 percent, respectively, away from their 52-week lows.

The market’s attention is now on individual stocks, signalling substantial sectoral changes in the PSU, IT, metals, power, oil, and healthcare sectors, according to analysts. IT and healthcare, which didn’t actively participate in the recent rally that started in April, are garnering interest due to attractive valuations.

Individual stocks are moving differently due to their own triggers and concerns, depending on sectoral or company-specific factors.

#tatasteel share price gained over a percent in the morning trade on November 21 after international brokerage Jefferies maintained a positive outlook on the company.

Its analysts expect Tata Steel's India margins to expand in the December quarter and Tata Steel Europe (TSE) losses to narrow by Q4 FY24. The brokerage sees up to 40 percent upside in the stock in a bull case scenario.

Tata Steel's European business is facing severe margin pressure due to the ongoing restructuring in the UK (TSUK) and blast furnace relining in the Netherlands (TSN). Since the TSN relining is expected to be completed by December, Jefferies expects it to lift profitability in the fourth quarter.
The company’s UK margin may also improve from the current lows but is likely to remain weak during the transition period of building a new 3mtpa EAF over the next three years, the brokerage said.

Analysts at Jefferies like Tata's improving asset footprint with rising Indian share in total volumes.

"Asian steel spread has already contracted to the lowest level in a decade, and any positive developments in China could provide upside," they said. In the base case scenario, the brokerage has pegged target price at Rs 145.

Better Asian steel spreads and sequential improvement in margins are expected to be the key triggers for the stock.

In an upside scenario, the brokerage sees up to 40 percent rally in the counter to Rs 175 a share. However, emissions, energy management and factors such as human rights and community relations, air quality, and employee health and safety remain some of the key material issues, it said.
