According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, the gross non-performing assets (GNPAs) of scheduled commercial banks (SCBs) declined to 4.5 percent in December 2022 from 6.5 percent a year ago. According to RBI rules, a loan is classified as NPA if there is no repayment of principal or interest for a period of 90 days. Banks have to set aside money, called provisions, against such loans. This impacts their profitability.

Gold prices are lower near midday Wednesday but have posted a significant rebound from the early-session low. Silver prices are modestly up after also seeing solid losses in early dealings. The U.S. dollar index has lost most of its earlier good daily gains, which has given the metals market bulls some confidence to step in to buy today’s price dips. However, rising U.S. Treasury and European bond yields, as well as lower crude oil prices, are keeping the precious metals depressed today. June gold was last down $14.20 at $2,005.30 and May silver was up $0.117 at $25.38.
The US dollar may not go down much against other currencies in the near future as the potential for further rate hikes are there and flight to safety during uncertainties.
Investors that follow the "sell in May and go away" investment strategy could miss out on a summer rally in the stock market later this year, according to a Tuesday note from Bank of America.
"Seasonality back to 1928 shows that May through October has the lowest average and median returns of any six-month period of the year with the S&P 500 up 65% of the time on an average return of 2.16% (3.11% median)," BofA technical strategist Stephen Suttmeier said.
The fact that the average and median gains for the stock market are not negative during the "sell in May and go away" time frame, the strategy "leaves much to be desired," Suttmeier said.
In addition, stocks have historically shown signs of strength during summer months, especially in the third year of a presidential cycle.
"May can be a weak month for the S&P 500, but if you 'sell in May and go away' you could miss a Summer rally," Suttmeier said.
Since 1928, June and August show solid average returns of nearly 1% and are both up nearly 60% of the time, while July has delivered an average return of 1.67% and is up 60% of the time.
That contrasts with the months of May and September, which have delivered average returns of -0.04% and -1.16%, respectively.
And during the third year of a presidential cycle, the S&P 500 has generated an average return of 3.26% from June to August and is up 70% of the time.

The India Volatility Index, or India VIX, commonly known as the “fear index,” is close to a 20-month low, indicating that investors are bullish in their outlook for the stock market.
The reason VIX is called the “fear index” is because it is a measure of the expected volatility in the index over the next 30 days. Simply put, it reflects the market's expectation for how much an underlying asset will fluctuate, based on the prices of options contracts traded on the asset.
Last week, the India VIX fell to 11.79 points, the lowest level since July 2021. So far in April alone, the VIX has fallen 20 percent.
A low VIX reading is generally interpreted as a sign of investor confidence and market stability whereas a high VIX generally indicates that investors are worried about big price moves on the downside.
